Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is making headlines after publicly admitting his “mistake” in the aftermath of a political rift within his family that played out during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Pawar’s acknowledgment came during a rally in Gadchiroli, where he spoke about the consequences of mixing family and politics.

The statement appears to reference the contest between his wife, Sunetra Pawar, and his cousin, Supriya Sule, for the Baramati constituency. Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) suffered a heavy defeat, winning only one of the four seats it contested. In contrast, the faction led by his uncle, Sharad Pawar, performed significantly better, securing eight out of ten seats(India Today)(mint).

Pawar’s remarks also come at a time of growing tensions within other political families. He addressed Maharashtra state minister Dharmarao Baba Aatram’s daughter, Bhagyashri, urging her not to oppose her father in the upcoming state assembly elections. Drawing from his personal experience, he noted, “Society never accepts breaking one’s own family,” reflecting on the emotional and political costs of such conflicts(mint).

The fallout from these political family feuds has placed Ajit Pawar in the spotlight, sparking discussions about the role of family dynamics in Indian politics, especially as Maharashtra gears up for the state assembly elections later this year.

While admitting to his own errors, Ajit Pawar’s comments signal an attempt at reconciliation, though the electoral consequences of these family disputes remain to be seen.
