UPSC Declares Civil Services Prelims Result

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the much-awaited results of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026. A total of 13,343 candidates have successfully cleared the prelims and qualified to appear for the Civil Services Main Examination.
The preliminary exam was held on May 24, 2026, at various centres across the country. This year, UPSC had notified 1,016 vacancies for the prestigious Civil Services Examination. The shortlisted candidates will now move on to the next stage of this highly competitive selection process.
Comparison with Last Year
For context, in the previous year’s examination (CSE 2025), 14,161 candidates were shortlisted against 1,087 vacancies. While the number of qualifiers has dipped slightly this year, the competition remains intense as thousands of aspirants continue to fight for limited positions in India’s top civil services.
The Three-Tier Selection Process
The Civil Services Examination, conducted every year by UPSC, is one of the toughest and most prestigious exams in India. It consists of three stages:
- Preliminary Examination (Objective type – screening test)
- Main Examination (Descriptive written papers)
- Personality Test / Interview
Only those who clear all three stages make it to the final merit list and get selected for services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other central civil services.
